The Sanitaire SC5845B bagless upright vacuum cleaner came to us in need of some minor assembly. The handle assembly slid easily into its place, and was easy to secure with the included screws. A washable HEPA filter inserts into the side of the housing. Once its extension hose was connected, we were ready to start cleaning.
A decibel reading of just 69.5 places the SC5845B at the lower end of the average residential vacuum cleaner noise output range. This reading did not change as we switched between height adjustment settings or cleaned with the extension hose, and we were able to talk comfortably over the vacuum the entire time it was running. But the SC5845B's low noise output doesn't mean that it compromises on cleaning power. From the moment we turned it on, this vacuum cleaner seemed almost self-propelled on our low-pile carpeting and bare floors. It also glided easily over our shag rug while fluffing and lifting the strands as we passed them over. The seven-setting height adjustment dial on the SC5845B's power nozzle allowed for easy changing between different floor types, and while we tested only these two extremes, we are confident that there is a height adjustment setting for every carpet height in between.
The SC5845B offers onboard storage space for its included nesting wand, crevice tool, and dusting brush, all of which can attach to the extension hose or wand. The hose offered immediate suction when it was removed from its retainer, and made easy work of cleaning desks and cubicle walls. Doing this also cuts some of the airflow from the power nozzle and redirects it to the hose. When we returned the hose and returned the SC5845B to its usual position, it instantly regained full suction power.
Whereas most commercial vacuum cleaners use paper dustbags, the SC5845B is bagless. A dust capacity of 3.5quarts allowed us to vacuum our entire space without needing to empty the dustcup at all. When we did empty the container at the end of our cleaning session, a trap door on its bottom opened and released all of its contents directly into the trash. We returned the dust container to the housing and set it aside for another day.
